Travel is about deep layers of sense, memory, and meaning, amplified by the fact that we invest in experiences with time and money. Seeing saguaro cacti in fictional New Austin is nothing like seeing them in the actual Sonoran Desert. Games like this, it has to be said, don’t stand up to the actual experience of travel. There's some irony in a video game that worships nature and simple living (Thoreau may well have despised the idea), but it fits a growing trend. Walden, A Game is another quintessential example, taking gamers into the body and mind of Henry David Thoreau as he tries to survive in a cabin near Walden Pond, receiving occasional letters from Ralph Waldo Emerson and seeking inspiration from the sounds of the forest and the books he stumbles across. Firewatch is set in Wyoming's Shoshone National Park. ![]()
